A&N Employment Guarantee Council meets
Port Blair, May 14: The 5th meeting of A&N Employment Guarantee Council of MGNREGA was held under the Chairmanship of the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM in the conference hall of Raj Niwas here today. Besides reviewing the progress of MGNREGA scheme, the meeting also discussed various issues pertaining to effective implementation of the scheme in the Islands.
Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor stated that scope of the MGNREGA scheme may be expanded for generating employment and for creating assets for the community and should be ensured that the scheme is not misused for individual benefits. He further stated that the Programme Officers under MGNREGA must educate the villagers about the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the scheme so that people in the villages can properly understand the MGNREGA scheme. He also directed the Programme Officers to adopt a helping approach towards the villagers coming to them for their community works.
The Lt Governor directed that in order to bring maximum transparency, respectable people of society who do not have any affiliation with any political party may be engaged for social auditing to ensure objective reporting. He further laid emphasis on the need for close coordination between the PRI members, District and MGNREGA functionaries and directed that PRI members must be actively involved not only in MGNREGA scheme but in all other centrally sponsored schemes for availing maximum benefit of such schemes.
The Chief Secretary, Mr. Anand Prakash, Zilla Parishad Adhyakshs of South Andaman and N&M Andaman, Chairperson, SWB, senior officers of the Administration and representatives of Local Self-Government were also present in the meeting.
