Port Blair, Jan 10: The Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray today visited Rabindra Bangla Vidyalaya (RBV) to inspect the infrastructure of the school. To his utter dismay he found that RBV, one of the prominent schools of the past, is presently horribly mismanaged by authorities.
During his inspection the Member of Parliament found that toilet blocks are overflowing with human waste. The urinal was also inundated with urine as the drainage remained blocked for past several months.
“The urinal is inundated upto knee height and the nose busting smell was unbearable. I wonder how students use this urinal and why the school management is quiet,” Ray told Andaman Sheekha after the inspection.
Not only this, the MP also noticed that several street dogs roaming inside the school. According to MP students of around eight classes are made to sit on the floor.
“There are 50 to 70 students in each class, which is a clear cut violation of RTE Act, according to which in a class there should not be more than 30-40 students,” Ray added.
During the inspection it was found that a new block of class rooms have been constructed inside the campus, for which there is no walkways and the new block does not have toilet block or urinals. The MP also found that the school does not have clean drinking water facilities for students.
“This is disappointing to see such condition of government run schools, that too in Port Blair city. Some portion of the school is falling apart. Situation is worst in remote Islands. I demand sizeable increase in the funds for Education Department in 2012-2014 plan so that schools could be properly managed. The Administration must cut short budget for unwanted things like Sea Planes, A/Cs for offices, Fridges for offices, Marbels and tile for new government buildings etc.,” the MP told Andaman Sheekha.
The inspection was made by the MP following complaints received by him from some students of the school.
“Just yesterday there was a protest by Boys School Students, who also wanted better infrastructure. Andaman students are well informed and active and if nothing is done now, tomorrow there will surely be strikes and protest in every government school,” Bishnu added.
