Port Blair, Feb 19: In a first time ever, the Department of Labour has tied up with prestigious construction giant, M/s Larsen & Toubro for the Training & Placement of 30 candidates selected out of group of 100, drawn from all parts of A & N Islands. Tribal candidates also form a part of the trainee group. The prospective trainees would be provided free boarding and lodging at the Construction Skills Training Institute (L&T-CSTI) at Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. The training component also is free of cost and the trainees are given small stipend.
M/s Larsen & Toubro Limited, are a multimillion dollar international conglomerate, having projects all over the world. The trainings given by them in the construction sector are of international standards, and equip their trainees for employment in the most ambitious of projects, requiring specialized skills.
The present training has been arranged through Shri. Manoharan Kumar, Director of the L&T-authorized NGO, Vidya Yuva Kendra, based in Port Blair, and promises 100% placement to the trainees.
The first batch was seen off by the Chief Secretary Shri. Anand Prakash.
The Secretary (Labour) Ms. Rashmi Krishnan, the Labour Commissioner Shri. Madhusudan Baidya and the Principal of the ITI Shri. Venketesh.Ch. were also present.
In his address to the trainees, the Chief Secretary shared with them his personal experience of L&T’s Institutes and motivated them to empower themselves by this programme. He conveyed to them his confidence that, after completion of training programme there will be an ocean of opportunities for them in the construction industries both within India and Abroad. He also said that their experience could very certainly make them masters in their respective fields, and many of them might consider opening ventures of their own.
The Administration is primed to address the issue of unemployment and underemployment in a concerted manner. To begin with, the Employment Officer would be connecting with registered unemployed candidates to reassess the actual position of unemployment and arrive at a more accurate assessment of the number of unemployed, the sectors in which they exist, as well as the skill sets available.
The Administration is also organizing a job fair sometime in the middle of March’2016 through a one stop platform aimed at bringing together prospective employers and employees in a bid to attempt on the spot hiring.
