Baratang, Feb 02: Residents of Kuttan village and adjoining hamlets are facing acute water crisis these days. Villagers allege that despite dwelling the remote hamlets for decade, the agencies concerned have still not provided water supply connections to their homes forcing them to haul potable water from natural water sources or public water connections available close to their villages.
According to reports, the remote residents have been long suffering from lack of water connections. “Women of the families draw water from wells or water bodies and the practice has been continuing for years. As the summer approached, the natural water sources get dried up and villagers reel under acute water scarcity. However, the administration has till date found no solution to the problem of hundreds of families here. During peak summer, villagers consume water drawn from small nallahs which, they fear, are highly contaminated,” said some residents of Kuttan.
The UT Administration should immediately depute a team of top officials to inspect the water supply situation in the remote villages of Baratang. After inspecting the situation thoroughly, necessary steps should be taken to provide water supply connections to the villagers to prevent any further hardships to the old inhabitants of the island.
