Anger brewing among Tsunami affected farmers on compensation issue

Port Blair, May 06: Tsunami affected farmers of South Andaman, who lost their land in 2004 tsunami, have decided to conduct a Dharna and a massive rally on 14 May 2012 if their demands for compensation, in their terms, are not fulfilled.
Though the Administration is ready to give compensation to all these farmers in lieu of land the farmers are not willing to give away their land for compensation. “The Lt. Governor of A & N Islands and the Home Minister of India had earlier assured us that our land will not be taken against compensation then why the are demanding our land in lieu of compensation now?” questioned a farmer.
The decision was taken during series of meeting conducted by the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with landless farmers of entire South Andaman region today.
At 10.00 am the Member of Parliament held a meeting with farmers of Terlerabad, Bimblitan at 12.30 pm another meeting was conducted with farmers of Collinpur, Tushnabad, Tirur at 2.00 pm the MP met with farmers of Mithakhari, Hati Tapu, Ograbranch, Namunaghar and Danduspoint and at 3.30 the MP met with farmer of Wimberlygunj, Bambooflat and Brindaban.
During all these meeting 10 members committee was formed for every area and it was decided to conduct Street Corner meetings in all the affected areas from May 11 to May 13, 2012.
“I am ready to take a 10 member delegation of farmers to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister of India, if our demands are not heard,” the MP told farmers during today’s meetings.
In these meeting it was unanimously decided that a dharna and a massive rally will be organized by tsunami affected farmers from Tiranga Park to Raj Niwas on 14 May 2012.
