Port Blair, Dec 18: The Municipal Council has launched a pilot project for collection of segregated garbage from households on Friday at Dairyfarm, Ward no. 14. The Councillor and other officials of the Council were present on the occasion. The project is aimed at moving towards improved system of solid waste segregation at source by creating awareness among the ward residents, shop keepers and other stakeholders. A ward level residential solid waste management committee was also identified by the sanitary wing of PBMC with the co-operation of the Councillor.
The Chairperson, PBMC, Smt Sheela Singh, Councillor, Mr Iswar Rao, Secretary, PBMC, Executive Engineer(Solid Waste Management), Sanitary Officer, Senior Sanitary Inspector and Sanitary Inspectors participated in the pilot drive that saw enthusiastic response from the public present on the occasion. If successful, the pilot drive would be replicated in others wards early next year. The general public in the municipal area have been requested to cooperate with the PBMC officials in achieving better hygiene in their surrounding and to enable better Solid waste management in the city.
Currently, the Municipal Council collects mixed waste from individual households without segregation at the source level. The Council has now initiated efforts to segregate the biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable at the household level itself to achieve better management of solid waste in an environment friendly manner.
