Port Blair, Nov 19: On the instructions of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi has directed to hold a workshop for the Agro-Climatic Zone of the Island region on Wednesday at ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) here in collaboration with ICAR – Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI), Bengaluru.
In his address, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI informed that the workshop is aimed at evolving strategies for development of agriculture and its allied sectors in the Island region comprising of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep group of Islands. The workshop will also formulate strategies and roadmap for providing technological backstopping towards sustainable development of agriculture and its allied sectors in the region for food, nutrition, livelihood and environmental securities, he said.
Dr. T. Janakiram, Assistant Director General (Horticulture Science), ICAR, New Delhi along with Smt R. Menaka, Secretary, Agri/AH/Fish, Smt Sobhana K. Unny, Deputy Secretary (Planning), Director of Agriculture, AH&VS, Fisheries, Director, ANTRI, GM, NABARD, Officer I/C NIOT, FSI, ANIIDCO of A & N Administration represented the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the workshop, while Dr. S. Dixit, Director, ATARI, Bengaluru, Dr. K. Nirmal Babu, Project Coordinator, AICRP on Spices, Kozhikode, Dr. K. Laxminarayana, Pr. Scientist, ICAR-CTCRI, RS, Bhubaneswar, Dr. S. Srinivasalu, Director, IOM, Chennai, Dr. P. Krishnan, NCSCM, Chennai, Dr. Mohammed Koya, Scientist, CMFRI, Dr. C.N. Haneefa Koya, District Fisheries Officer, Lakhsadweep, Mr. P.P. Kidave Koya, District Agriculture Officer, Lakshadweep from mainland particited in the deliberations. Farmers from Car Nicobar, Nimbudera, Neil Island, IMC Members, HoDs of CIARI & KVKs also attended the workshop.
