Port Blair, Oct 5: The Andaman and Nicobar Police has initiated efforts for introduction of Tourist Police in these islands.
The move comes in the wake of increasing human-crocodile encounters in sea beaches across the territory and the failure of the Tourism and Forest Department in averting the fatal encounters.
Tour Operators have been particularly demanding Tourist Police force to prevent crocodile encounters in tourist spots of these islands.
“The presence of tourist police at beaches will instil a sense of security among the visitors, which in turn will increase tourist footfalls in these islands,” said some tour operators.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, the Director General of Police, Mr Rajesh Malik informed that the Andaman and Nicobar Police is actively considering introduction of Tourist Police in this territory.
“The proposal in this regard was mulled way back, but hit certain hurdles midway. However, efforts to introduce Tourist Police has been revived and with the support of the UT Administration, the proposal would be implemented soon,” the DGP added.
“The Mainstay of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is tourism and because of this safety and security of tourists is very important. More than safety and security the perception that we are safe and secure, is important,” the DGP added.
