The Wildlife week is celebrated every year from 2nd October to 8th October with an aim to sensitize the people about the importance of wildlife and its habitats and the need to conserve it. The celebration coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and seeks to inculcate amongst the masses a culture of tolerance, understanding, compassion and appreciation for the wildlife.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are well known for their rich, diverse and unique wildlife inhabiting dense tropical forests, coastal and marine ecosystems. The vast array of life-forms existing in these ecosystems maintains an ecological balance which is necessary for the survival of mankind. An impact on any element of the ecosystem has ramifications throughout the ecosystems. It should therefore be our joint endeavor to protect, conserve and nurture this pristine wealth and leave healthy ecosystems for our families and future generations.
On the occasion of 61st Wildlife Week, 2015, I call upon all the islanders, especially the youth and the students, local community, organizations, civil society and business consortia to join and support us in making concerted and coordinated long time efforts to conserve and protect wildlife in the Islands.
