Port Blair, Apr 24: A meeting was held today at Raj Niwas between the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands, Lt. General (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh and the tsunami affected farmers, who had lost their land in 2004 tsunami. According to reports, during the meeting, the farmers refused to surrender their land against the compensation.
Tsunami affected farmers welcomed the move of Administration to pay the compensation amount expeditiously, however they have refused to surrender the submerged land in lieu of compensation, based on the assurance given by the Lt. Governor and Home Minister of India, earlier.
“The proposal of the Administration to acquire the land in lieu of compensation is not acceptable to us,” one of the Members of delegation told Andaman Sheekha after the meeting.
According to reports, the Gram Sudhar Sangham will soon have a high level meeting to decide further course of action on this issue.
