Today is World Rabies Day, a global event to create awareness about the scourge of the disease and to highlight the need for its prevention. Our Union territory is blessed to be free from Rabies.
Rabies is a highly fatal disease of humans and all other warm blooded species. It is transmitted mainly by rabid dog’s bite or through contamination of broken skin or mucous membranes with saliva from an infected animal. It is reported that, every year a sizeable number of human beings and livestock die in India due to rabies causing large financial burden. Though there is no known cure, the disease can be prevented by vaccination. World Rabies Day is celebrated on September 28th every year to commemorate the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur who developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine.
The responsibility of maintaining the U.T.’s status of Freedom from Rabies is upon each one of its citizens. All animal welfare activists, animal lovers, animal welfare organizations and the professionals from Public Health and Veterinary sectors should strive to sensitize the public on the issues related to control of Rabies and the significance of doing so.
With our combined effort we can continue to keep the territory free from Rabies for the future generations
