Port Blair, Aug 31: The Directorate of Health Services in association with Regional Leprosy Training and Research Institute (RLTRI), Raipur conducted a Reconstructive Surgery (RCS) Camp for the first time at G.B Pant Hospital for leprosy affected patients of the UT from Aug 25-29, 2015.
All leprosy affected patients were screened for deformity and 32 patients were registered for the camp in which 17 patients were selected for Reconstructive Surgery after scrutiny by Surgeon and the Anaesthetist. Dr. K.M Kamble, Joint Director (Ortho) and his team from RLTRI, Raipur and doctors from GB Pant Hospital performed operation on eleven males and five female leprosy treated cases for deformity apart from 01 case of orthopedic handicap patient on 25th and 26th August 2015 at G.B Pant Hospital, Port Blair.
The patients with foot drop, claw hand and lagophthalmos deformities have undergone the reconstructive surgery during the period so that they can reconnect with society without stigma. The patients are recuperating in the hospital and would be given physiotherapy so that they can lead a normal life.
Dr. K.M.Kamble also interacted with the doctors and nursing staffs and students of G.B Pant Hospital, Port Blair and gave a detailed description of Reconstructive Surgery, pre and post operative care etc. Dr Kamble is a recognized reconstructive surgeon and is well known internationally for his contribution in the field of RCS. He also assured for conducting more such camps in near future if more cases are registered for person with disability, said Dr. Avijit Roy, Deputy Director (Leprosy) in a release.
