Port Blair, Aug 16: In a significant move, the Directorate of Shipping Services has commenced preliminary works for computerization of cargo bookings to benefit both passengers and consignees in inter-island, mainland passenger vessels and cargo vessels. Once fully computerized, consignees will be able to track their cargo movement as also trail the position of the vessel.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha, the Deputy Director of Shipping Services, Mr R Veeraiah said after computerisation of the Cargo Booking Facility, clients can track consignments and position of vessels online. Besides, efforts are underway to alert consignees through SMSs after their consignments reach the target location. Computerisation of cargo booking will bring with more transparency in the system. Besides, the introduction of computerised services will also do away with last minute hassles as consignees will have ample time to choose the vessel then intend to book their consignment, added Mr Veeraiah.
