Port Blair, June 08: There is another area of great concern where the Lt. Governor has expressed his anguish and disappointment and that is the maintenance of cleanness of the city and in the spots visited by local residents and tourists in other places in the Islands.
The Swacchh Bharat Campaign, if you all may recall, was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister last year, and responding to the call of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, it was also launched with great enthusiasm and hope in these Islands as well. However, there has been tardy implementation of the scheme. There appears to be poor response and poor sense of responsibility shown by the people of these Islands.
Littering can be seen all over the city again. While the civic agency and the PRIs are doing their bit, it is the responsibility of the citizens as well to ensure that there is no littering and dumping of garbage all around.
On Sunday, the LG had visited the Munda Pahad beach area, and was shocked to see plastic bottles, plates and used paper napkins etc. strewn all over. People who visited this tourists spot had obviously left behind their garbage. While the Forest Department staff will be doing their work to clean up this important tourist spot, it also calls for action on the part of the citizens / visitors who should have ensured that they did not leave behind their garbage.
He has urged civil society members to be more responsible and make the Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan a success by being more vigil in this regard. He has also appealed to the PBMC members and PRIs to help to create awareness among the civil society and tourists.
The Forest Department, the PBMC and the Police have been asked to take stern action against all such offenders.
The Secretaries of the Rural Development as well as Urban Development Departments have been asked to speed respective infrastructure plans.
