Port Blair, June 05: The teaching and non-teaching staff of JNRM observed World Environment Day on 5 June 2015 by conducting talks, cleanliness drive and tree plantation.
Addressing the gathering Dr. Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM called upon them to preserve the environment by rising to the clarion call of the Prime Minister to keeping the surroundings clean. He also called upon them to avoid the use of plastics, stop littering and give up the habit of chewing tobacco products and spitting. Dr. S. Jayakumar, HoD Plant Science explained the effects of global warming caused by burning fossil fuels and requested everyone to plant more trees.
Dr. Itty Abraham and Dr. Lavanya Kathiravelu, Professors from National University of Singapore who are on a short visit to the Islands spoke on the similarities between Singapore and the Andamans and said it was the collective responsibility of everyone to protect the environment. Shri Abdul Salam, Assistant Professor, Tourism Studies, JNRM described how more tourists could be attracted by keeping the environment clean and preserving the rare flora and fauna of the Island eco-systems.
The meeting was followed by a cleanliness drive and tree plantation.
