Mayabunder, Mar 10: Andaman Day was celebrated in M.G.Govt.College, Mayabunder in a befitting way by the Department of History. The purpose was to generate awareness among the future generations regarding their history, the contributions made by their forefathers for making these islands a prosperous and pilgrimage for many of India’s and foreign tourists.
In the beginning of the programme, Dr.P.K.Mondal, faculty Department of History vividly described the historical events beginning from the period of aborigines, foreign intervention to these islands, British occupation, arrival of prisoners and freedom fighters, Japanese occupation and penal settlement.
He stressed that each and every section had contributed a lot for making Andaman and the younger generations who must know the sacrifices made by their ancestors for making these islands glorious.
Dr.A.K.Pandey, Associate Professor, Incharge of History Department described in detail the pain and trouble taken by the inhabitants both by misrule of British and the Japanese. He reminded the students about the Japanese torture to the inhabitants.
As a result of which they become more strong and aspired for freedom. Dr.R.N.Rath, Principal, M.G.Govt.College, Mayabunder being the Chief Guest on this occasion appreciated the efforts of the department for organising the students to be conscious about their past.
He said that without knowing our past we cannot build up our future. He cautioned that we should know about our true history not the distorted history described by some authors.
“We should be proud being the inhabitants of A & N Islands where there is cosmopolitan culture and a real picture of Unity in Diversity in true sense. We are lucky to be a part of miniature India,” he said. We should propagate our culture to others. The students were enthusiastic and their queries were attended by their teachers up to their satisfaction.
