Port Blair, Mar 09: Naval Diving Unit, Port Blair under the Naval Component of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, once again treated a tourist, Ms Megha Saxena on 08 Mar 15. The tourist while diving with Ocean Tribe, one of the dive centres at Havelock on 06 Mar 15 developed symptoms of diving sickness and was referred to the Diving Unit where she was given Oxygen Recompression Therapy for about one and a half hour in the Recompression Chamber of CDU, Port Blair.Anoop Singh, LSCD-I, an experienced diver from the CDU was in attendance in the Recompression Chamber with the patient, constantly monitoring her vital parameters under the supervision of Vinod Kumar, MCPO IICD I. The Recompression Therapy was supervised by Lt CdrAshish Mittal, Officer-in-Charge, Naval Diving Unit, Port Blair.After the treatment, the patient was handed over to INHS Dhanvantri, Port Blair. The patient reported full recovery from the diving illness.
This kind of specialised facility for the treatment of diving related accidents is only available with Naval Diving Unit, Port Blair, and has been put in use four times in last three months for treating divers for Decompression Sickness (DCS), a condition arising from dissolved gases coming out of blood in bubbles inside the body on sudden depressurisation.Altruistic efforts of the Naval Divers have resulted in saving of large number of tourists. Andaman and Nicobar Command remains committed towards Humanitarian and civil aid operations, where precious human lives are at stake in these Islands.
