Port Blair, Feb 08: The flea market organised by the Tourism Department on last Saturday at the Maha Vir Singh road adjacent near marina Park got overwhelming response from General Public.
Thousands of people reached the venue to enjoy the evening with food, music, art etc. Large numbers of foreign and local tourists were also seen in the market.
The main objective behind setting up of such market in the islands is to acquaint the tourists with the local culture, cuisine, art and handicrafts etc, which in a way, will also encourage the participation of the local populace towards promotion of tourism. The Tourism Department allotted 35 stalls to various individuals and agencies including the Ranchi & Karen Associations.
“Such a pleasant break for Islanders. Lovely evening, music, food and swelling happy crowd,” said a tourist from Kolkata.
However, local residents have suggested some improvement viz keeping distance between two music groups, more chairs for spectators, large sitting area for crowd, more shops, more live orchestras, involving tour operators for diverting tourists etc.
