Port Blair, Feb 04: As per the directions of Hon’ble Lt. Governor, the Directorate of Education, in association with the Social Welfare Department and A&N Police Department, is organising a half-day seminar named “UMMEED….Living for a Better Tomorrow” to highlight the increasing incidents of suicides by the islanders in general and by students in particular as well as social issues, like alcoholism, drug abuse, violence against women, sexual abuse and exploitation of children and issues of girl child.
The seminar will be organised at the DBRAIT Auditorium on 5th February 2015 from 09.30 am to 01.45 pm and will be attended by wide range of stakeholders, including the Nodal Teachers appointed in schools both under Directorate of Education as well as Private Schools, teachers, students, parents, social workers, NGOs, PRIs, eminent citizens & civil society members.
The seminar will have two sessions – the first session will deal with topics like Psycho Social aspects of suicides among adolescents, legal provisions, sexual abuse among children and management of suicide-clinical prospective.
The second session will deal with violence against women, the issue of alcoholism and drug abuse and safety of women and girls and their empowerment. Each session will be followed by discussions. At the end there will be a set with recommendations/modalities to arrest the issues of suicides, domestic violence, sexual abuse, alcohol and drug abuse. Hon’ble Lt. Governor has consented to be present during the inaugural as well as the concluding sessions of the seminar at DBRAIT Auditorium.
Parents, social workers, PRI members and civil society members are requested to attend the seminar and participate in the deliberations so that concrete solutions emerge to tackle the important social concern and issues proposed to be discussed in the seminar.
