Port Blair, Feb 02: Marking World Wetlands Day 2015, ANCOL Eco Club Of Andaman College, Haddo, Port Blair organized various events to raise awareness among college students regarding wetlands and their role in our eco system. The theme for this year is “Wetlands for our future”.
Earlier to give students firsthand experience about the importance of wetlands, a nature walk cum bird watching programme was arranged for the college students at Sippighat Wetlands. Students reached the sight by 5.00 AM to explore nature in its pristine form. Students spotted various kinds of birds and other creatures which are dependent on the wetlands for their survival. The team was led by Shri Bency Joy, Eco Club Incharge accompanied by Dr Sushim Kumar Biswas and Shri Swapan all faculties of the college. Shri Bency Joy explained to the students how wetlands play an important role in our Eco system. He further added that wetlands are interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems .It is an area of the land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or for a long enough season every year to support aquatic plants and other creatures. They have been called the ‘nature’s kidneys’ because they cleanse our environment. Kumar Altaf Hussain of BPA Music was declared as the best bird watcher while Durga Prasad of Economics department was declared as the best Naturalistic observer of the team. In feedback writing T Prem Kumar and Jose Antony from Psychology department bagged the first two positions.
Earlier a Photography competition was also organized in which T Prabhakaran from English department bagged the first position.
