Port Blair, Jan 21: The Member of Parliament, A & N Islands Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has submitted a comprehensive proposal before the Minister of Shipping Govt. of India, New Delhi for development of the various infrastructures in A & N Islands for the benefit of Islanders. The proposal contains 43 projects/schemes which, according to the MP will greatly benefit the people these Islands.
Some important projects submitted for South Andaman are widening of Chatham Wharf to accommodate larger draft cargo vessel, construction of bridge connecting Port Blair and Dundas Point, construction of modern passenger hall & parking space at Phoenix Bay Jetty, Havelock and at Neil Islands to cater to the needs of visitors & tourists under PPP mode, setting up multiple slipway & Dry Dock at Blair Reef area, development of flat Bay area as fresh water lake, re- construction approach to Fisheries Jetty at Phoenix Bay Harbour providing bunkering facility in all ports of A & N Islands to stock the POL and extension of Hope Town Wharf.
Apart from this, the proposal for South Andaman also includes providing alternate sea route from Chidiyatapu to Little Andaman, augmentation of capacity in the existing Dry Dock of Marine Dry Dock Complex, construction of additional Slipway at Port Blair within the Harbour Complex of Junglighat to decongest the load of existing slipways, construction of Modern Yatch Marina at Ross Island under PPP mode, construction of additional Bridge to connect the Chatham Islands with Port Blair. The existing bridge is more than 35yrs old and need to have substitute, widening of existing Berth No. IV at Haddo Jetty to equip the Modern gantry type crane and other allied accessories.
The comprehensive proposal submitted by the MP before the Minister of Shipping Govt. of India, New Delhi also includes various facilities for the people of North & Middle Andaman. These include development of Mayabunder Wharf to facilitate the berthing of main land bound passenger vessels & cargo vessels, construction of multiple slipways at Rangat Bay, extension of Diglipur Jetty for berthing main land bound vessels, construction of Marine Hard at Diglipur as has been constructed in other Islands, construction of RCC Jetty at Gandhinagar & Hanspuri at Diglipur in lieu of floating Jetty and extention of existing Jetty at Rangat to berth bigger dimension passenger ships to cater the demand of commuters on closing the ATR road.
Development of port infrastructure facilities for the people of Southern group of islands have also found place in the proposal by the MP which includes construction of Dry Dock for ship repair facilities for Foreign and Indian registered vessel at Campbell Bay in A & N Islands in lieu of Transhipment Port, de-silting of Mus Break Water basin at Carnicobar in A & N Islands & Construction of additional berth along side of shore, extension of Kamorta wharf to facilitate mainland bound ships extension of Campbell Bay breakwater by another 300mtrs, and development of Katchal Jetty as Transit Passenger Hub for southern group of Islands bound passenger and cargoes.
All these projects will not only improve the socio economic conditions of this territory but also generate the employment opportunities and Tourism activities of these Islands, a release issued by MP office said here today.
