Port Blair, Dec 21: Animal Science Division, CARI in collaboration with NABARD, Port Blair and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Neil Island organized a 3 days training programme onWomen Empowerment on Rural Poultry by enhanced Rural Poultry Farming Techniques at Neil Island from 15th to 17th December, 2014 under NABARD funded project on Rural Poultry.A total of 25 farmers participated in the training programme.
Training programme was inaugurated by Shri.Dilip, Pradhan, Neil Island as a chief guest and Dr.S.K.Choubey, SVO, AHVS, Neil Island was present in the training programme. During the training programme, Dr.T.Sujatha, Principal Investigator of the project briefed about the project that this is the second phase of the project on rural poultry being implemented at Neil Island. Dr.S.K.Choubey narrated about the importance of health management in rural poultry through vaccination. Shri. Pradhan appreciated the active participation of women in the training programme as this project is exclusively for the women.
He motivated the women to come forward for adoption of technologies in rural poultry for betterment of their livelihood. He thanked the CIARI and Animal Husbandry for coming forward to improve the livestock farming status of Neil Island. Dr.Choudhary, SMS, KVK, Port Blair briefed about the need for scientific management including importance of housing and feeding. Dr.T.Sujatha briefed about the need for the improvement in rural poultry production in Neil as rural poultry is only source of eggs for the consumption for Neil island rural farmers. She also told importance of mini incubator that is going to be installed at Neil Island for the benefit of rural farmers and she narrated about the role incubator to increase the availability of chicks and desi eggs for consumption. Dr.M.S.Kundu, Pr.Scientist, CIARI told in detail about feeding for rural poultry.
For the first of its kind in the series of training programme conducted at Neil Island, exposure visit was arranged for the farmers of Neil Island to CIARI, Port Blair. A total of 14 farmers were brought to CIARI, Port Blair and they were exposed to brooding of chicks, scientific management of poultry and functioning of incubator. During valedictory function, Dr.S.Dam Roy, Director, CIARI told about the significant role of Nicobari fowl, its suitability for backyard condition and motivated the women trainees to form self help group for better out put from rural poultry in a coordinated manner. Shri. Thanvi, DGM, NABARD, Port Blair urged the farmers to form a society ‘’ A POULTRY PRODUCING SOCIETY’’ in Neil Island that will hasten to get loans for further development of poultry farming. Dr.A.Kundu, Head, Division of Animal Sciences gave a brief note on benefits of self help groups.
At the outset, trainees expressed that their knowledge level on rural poultry was enhanced to a great extent. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Choudhary.
