Port Blair, Oct 19: A group of Tribes living in Tamaloo Village of Car Nicobar Island has found an unexploded bomb of World War II vintage, defense sources said today.
The matter was soon reported to Andaman Nicobar Command (ANC), India’s first Tri-Service Joint Command.
To dispose off this bomb, Head Quarter of ANC was approached by civil authorities.
“Based on the request and mindful of danger to civilian population, a highly qualified team of Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of HQ ANC, led by Lt Cdr Sibal Rout along with three sailors, was dispatched immediately from Port Blair on 16 October, 2014,” the Public Relations Officer of Andaman Nicobar Command, Wg Cdr, RP Deshpande informed media today.
The team after arriving at Car Nicobar on 18 Oct, examined the situation and worked out a plan for disposal of the bomb in conjunction with Stn Cdr Car Nicobar.
According to sources, realizing the safety of villagers, the bomb was carried to the nearby beach at a safe location, in sand filled bucket and after taking all due care was detonated using Plastic Explosives.
“This timely reaction by HQ ANC and dangerous operation undertaken by MARCOS, with total disregard to own safety, avoided major incident from taking place and thus avoiding any casualties to the villagers,” the PRO of ANC added.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands are perhaps only part of India, which was a part of World War II, during which these Islands were captured by Japanese Forces from British Forces in 1942 and in 1945 these Islands were again re-captured by British Forces, but they never returned to these Islands.
