Port Blair, Aug 04: As a part of Disaster Preparedness, the District Disaster Management Authority, South Andaman is organizing a mock drill by simulating a Boat Accident like Scenario named “JAL – RAKSHA-14” tomorrow with the cooperation and support of Directorate of Disaster management, various line departments, Forest Department, Indian Coast Guard and Andaman & Nicobar Command.
The Purpose of the Mock-Exercise is to check the level of preparedness of the agencies involved in Disaster/Crisis Management and to remove the short comings observed during the Exercise in future and to make the General public aware.
This exercise will be organized at two sites, First Site is between Phoenix Bay Jetty and Chatham jetty and Second Site is between Wandoor Jetty of Forest Department and Jolly boy Island. The exercise will start at 10.00 AM on 5th August and a distress alert will be disseminated to State Control Room ,District control Room, Coast Guard Control Room by Port control . Immediately this information will be forwarded to Nodal officers of Police, Fire, Health, DSS, Coast Guard, NDRF, Transport to quickly respond to the incident Command.
A mock rescue operation will be carried out by the agencies involved. Apart from this scenario of a boat in distress there will be a demonstration of a scenario in which the Indian Coast Guard will deploy their Helicopter for the rescue of a yachtsman in distress near Phoenix Bay Jetty. By 11.00 AM the Mock exercise will be called off.
An appeal is placed before the General Public to provide their support to the “JAL –RAKSHA-14” exercise and not to get panic during the Exercise. The overall exercise is a step in the right direction to fulfill the vision laid out but the LG of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in achieving a Disaster Resilient Island Community.
