Special Report
Port Blair, July 25: Do you wish to get Lt. Governor’s commendation Certificate? If yes then, just find a few reputed people around you and convince them and recommend your name through them. That’s all, your name will be included among the probable people for Lt. Governor’s Commendation Certificate, given on Independence Day and Republic Day. After this little Public Relation tricks and a little political pressure will do the magic.
In return all you have to do is to recommend names of the people, who had recommended your name this year, for next year’s Independence Day or Republic Day LG’s Commendation Certificate. It’s like You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.
Whether you believe or not, this tactic really works, atleast till December 2013, this tactic yielded wonderful results for some self-claimed messiahs and son of the soil. Even very recently many of us must have met people, who move around with their applications, for nominating their names, ready and look for someone to put a signature.
But the question is whom should we blame, we, the people or the present system of finalizing names for the Lt. Governor’s Commendation Certificate.
Read the advertisement issued by the Administration inviting nomination for Lt. Governor’s Commendation Certificate, which says that one can not recommend his/her own name. As per the advertisement one need to recommend names of others for this prestigious certificate.
Firstly why should administration invite application to invite nominations for Lt. Governor’s Certificate? It should be the duty of the committee formed for selection of names, to look around in every Island and areas to find and nominate names of people, who have contributed towards the development and welfare of these Islands or who have shown exceptional moral value or bravery.
The problem of the present system is that a person, who is really deserving for this highest honour of these Islands and also having self respect, would never ask another person to nominate his name. Another problem with the present system is that those, who have good Public Relations will be able to easily convince two or three people to recommend his/her name for the LG’s commendation certificate.
Till Aug 15, 2013, we had seen many such people getting LG’s Commendation Certificate, who really don’t deserve much for this honour. Businessmen were honoured for doing business, politicians were honoured for social service and government officials were honoured for doing normal duty. There was hardly any case of exemplary contributions towards society.
Thankfully this year on 26, January 2014, we all saw some positive changes in the final list. Highly placed sources told Andaman Sheekha that for 26, January 2014 also dozens of undeserving names were recommended for LG’s Commendation Certificate, 90 percent of which were rejected by the present Lt. Governor and hence this 26 January 2014, we had witnessed some grassroot people, getting LG’s Commendation Certificate.
One wonders whether it should be LG’s job to finalize or reject names of people for this honour. Why can’t the committee constituted for recommending names for this purpose develop a full proof mechanism to keep shady and undeserving people away and to recommend names of truly deserving people? What does it take to read newspapers, do a little research to find some deserving people for this honour?
Remember by honouring undeserving people we are not only discouraging truly hard working people but also we setting a wrong example for our future generations.
