Members of Rotary Club of Port Blair planted saplings at ward No-2 near Haddo Jetty on 19th July as a part of 65th Vanmahotsava. This movement was initiated in the year 1950 by India’s then Union Minister for Agriculture, Dr.K M Munshi. This festival has gained immense national importance and every year, millions of saplings are planted all across India in observation of the Vanmahotsava week.
It helps spread awareness amongst people about the harm caused by the cutting down of trees. It offers shade and decorative landscapes, helps conserves soil deterioration, as trees are one of the best ways to prevent global warming and reduce pollution. Saplings of diverse species were planted with energetic participation of Rotary Club of Port Blair.
Mr. B.P Yadav, DFO. (Forest Extension & Publicity Division) arranged the saplings. Rtn. Dr.Dinesh, President of Rotary Club of Port Blair, planted sapling Casio Gloca a flowering plant. Rtn. Amit Goenka Secretary, Rtn. Rajesh Anand, Rtn. K .L Mahajan, Rtn. Guruswamy Dinakaran, Rtn.B.Dinesh Kumar. Rtn. Shyamal Choudhury, Rtn Krishnendu Kundu Rtn S.C Malhotra were present on the occasion.
Rtn. S.C Malhotra recalled that he was a student of “New Forest School”, Dehradun and had participated as a school student in the 1st Vanmahosatava in 1950 and Dr.Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India had planted the sapling and he witnessed the event as a student. Rtn. Krishnendu Kundu said we are happy and honoured to have Rtn. Malhotra amidst us. Mr. Ganashen, Chairman Municipal Council and the ward councilor were also present on this occasion.
