Port Blair, Jan 16: Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) conducted the training on Scientific Cultivation of Flower Crops and Khasi Mandarin to the tribal farmers of Meghalaya under the NEH and TSP component of CARI, Port Blair. The training programmes were organized in two villages namely Nongrim Nongladew and Madanritiang of Ri- Bhoi district of Meghalaya in collaboration with Mobile for Agri in North Eastern India (M4agri NEI) programme of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Barapani during 7th to 8th January, 2014.
The first training programme was organized in the village Nongrim Nongladew of Ri-Bhoi district on 07.01.2014 and second on 08.01.2014 at Madanritiang of Ri- Bhoi district. These two villages are the adopted villages under the project M4agri NEI programme of Central Agricultural University (CAU) led by Dr. R. Saravanan, Associate professor, CAU and Dr. L. Devarani, Assistant professor, CAU with whom the training was arranged in collaboration. The training was given on scientific cultivation of flower crops like Gerbera, Carnation, Anthurium, Heliconias and Orchid by Dr. V. Baskaran, Senior Scientist, CARI. The training lecture on scientific cultivation of Khasi Mandarin was delivered by Dr. K. Abirami, Scientist, CARI. The other resource persons during the training programme were Mr. Donboklang Jyrwa, Arjune Ryngkhlem and Ms. Paharasainiing Syeimleih, who helped in translation of the lectures in their local tribal language khasi. Planting materials of Gerbera, Banana and Pineapple were distributed to the tribal farmers of both the villages Nongrim Nongladew and Madanritiang. The training programme was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI, Port Blair and Nodal officer, TSP along with Dr. D. R. Singh, Head, Division of Horticulture and Forestry, CARI, Port Blair.
