Port Blair, Oct 20: A three days training programme on “Improved management of goat for sustainable nutritional security in Tribal farming community” was organized by Animal Science Division, CARI, Port Blair in collaboration with KVK, Car Nicobar & DAH &VS, Car Nicobar at Small Lapathy Village from 11.10.2013 to 13.10.2013 under the Tribal Sub Plan. Altogether 25 farmers attended the training from different Tuhait of the Small Lapathy Village.
Smti. Irena Mark, 1st Headman, Small Lapathy was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the training programme. In her address, she highlighted the importance of this training programme for the benefit of the tribal community to get enhanced income and profit from the goat husbandry. She thanked the Director, CARI for selecting this village under the Tribal Sub Plan for improvement of the animal husbandry practices especially the goat which has a great potential in the Car Nicobar. She also urged the trainees to take active participation and utilize the opportunity for up gradation of their knowledge.
Dr. A.K. Bardhan, SVO, Car Nicobar and Guest of Honour gave a brief note about the importance of the goat farming and its benefits. He also briefed about the scientific management practices and highlighted the importance of deworming and other disease control strategies. Mr. K. Marcus, 2nd Headman also spok on the occasion. The inaugural function was also attended by Mr. Othniel Andren, 3rd Headman, Mr. Zacharia Rophall, 4th Headman, Mr. Marcus Shadracs, 5th Headman and Mr. Onisimus Curtis, Secretary, Tribal Council of Small Lapathy Village.
Dr. Jai Sunder, Course Coordinator, highlighted the importance of the goat farming its conservation and propagation of the Teresa goat. During the three days training programme details on the housing, feeding, health care, disease control, prevention and economics of the scientific goat farming were explained to the trainees. Dr. Zachariah George, SMS, Car Nicobar gave detailed lectures on the reproductive management of the goat farming and Mr. Ravi Kumar, SMS, KVK about the integration of the Fish cum Goatery in the IFS model. Mr. Chandrika Ram, SMS, KVK explained about the housing for the goats.
The training programme was concluded on 13th October 2013 and certificates were distributed to all the trainees by the 1st Headman. Dr. Zacharia George, SMS KVK proposed vote of thanks. The training was done under the overall guidance and supervision of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI, Port Blair.
