Port Blair, Aug 13: Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, A & N Islands, in the wake of a situation wherein the students of different schools in Havelock Island had resorted to Strike, visited there on 12th and 13th of August, 2013. Taking note of the local situation and consequent to the discussions held with different Officials of Directorate of Education, Mr. Ray observed numerous shortcomings in the functioning of Schools in the Island.
He noted that there was an acute shortage of Teachers, amenities and infrastructure in Schools at Havelock. According to the information he gathered from different sources, he could understand that there is shortage of 2 PGT(Science), 1 Vice Principal, 2 Head Masters, 14 GTTs, 18 PSTs, 1 PET, 1 Lab Assistant, 1 Attendant, 6 PCCs, 7 SCM in different Schools.
Similarly, there is shortage of 6 classrooms, 3 each in GPS Havelock Jetty and GMS Kalapathar. For the want of 3 Science Labs, the GSSS, Havelock students are facing problems in pursuing their education. This apart, the Toilet blocks in different schools are in dilapidated conditions. Non- availability of water is another problem being faced by students of different schools.
Mr. Ray noted that as per Annual Plan 2012-13, 8 classrooms and 3 Science labs were to be constructed at GSSS, Havelock, but no progress has been made in the proposed work. Similarly works for construction of classrooms in GMS Havelock and other schools are pending since last 3 years, despite finding place in the Annual Plan Programme of last year. Playgrounds in schools in Havelock have been a long pending demand which has not been met as yet.
Demanding early solution to the above issues, two Parents namely Mr. Shubash Baroi and Mr. Deepika Haider have resorted to Hunger Strike until Death.
Mr. Ray has sent a SOS message to the Secretary, Education Department, A & N Administration, from Havelock informing the situation arising out of the STRIKE by School Students and the indefinite strike started by parents and has requested for early resolution of the burning issues. A communication from MP said.
