Port Blair, Aug 01: Self Employment through tailoring related activities is also an area of activities where women particularly women in distress, widow and deserted can be engaged gainfully in the absence other Government or other job to them.
As per an survey conducted to ascertain women’s aptitude towards self-employment activities it was revealed that most of them indicated their interest towards tailoring related activities. Various agencies are imparting tailoring related training but most of them after training could not set their own unit due to various reasons. There was persistent demand from ladies groups’ engaged in tailoring related activities for enhancing their capacity building in tailoring activities for quality tailoring products and its marketability.
UNNATI was pursuing their demand with various agencies of mainland and lastly USHA International Ltd., New Delhi who have good name in the tailoring field and they are also conducting training programme in tailoring in other countries agreed to work in partnership with UNNATI for capacity building training in tailoring, fashion design, embroidery and sewing machine repair works in A&N Islands.
As per agreement 30 women already having tailoring know- how selected from 30 villages and imparted them training recently for their capacity building and each were also issued sewing machine free of cost who in turn will train 20 candidates from their respective villages. Thus 600 women who would be trained during 2013 will also be issued sewing machine at subsidized rate under the programme.
The 30 trainers who have been trained with the support of the expert of Usha International Ltd, a few of them formed a group and they are getting works order from Govt. and Private Parties because of their quality of works. UNNATI seeing their enthusiasm and interest also provided them space for working and sewing machines on easy terms so that more needy women knowing tailoring could be engaged in tailoring activities. They started their activities stated in UNNATI’s tailoring centre at Dollygunj from 27.07.2013. Under the arrangement they receive work order in the centre where clothes after cutting are distributed among members of group trained in tailoring. Administration may kindly consider to give preference in a awarding works to this group as per provision. The group also met authorities and requested to award the works on preferential basis as per Govt. directives.
President UNNATI also requested Mr. G. Bhasker, President Chamber of Commerce A&N Islands to engage this group by cloths merchants for readymade garment making the president also kindly agreed to appeal all cloth merchants to help this group by providing piece work.
