Port Blair, July 18: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee has expressed its deep sorrow on the passing away of Com. Samar Mukherjee, freedom fighter and former Leader of C.P.I (M) group in Parliament, today at Kolkatta.
He was 101 years old. A legendary Communist, Com Samar Mukherjee was also a Member of the Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) and Chairman of the CPI (M) Central Control Commission. A veteran trade union leader, Com Samar Mukherjee also held the post of All India General Secretary of the CITU.
His birth centenary was celebrated on 7th November, 2012. He had actively participated in the freedom movement and was jailed several times – both before independence as well as after independence. Com. Samar Mukherjee joined freedom movement in his student life through which he became a member of the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee. In the year 1940, he was attracted towards Marxist ideology and became a member of the undivided Communist Party of India. He was a founder member of the C.P.I (M) after the split in the undivided CPI on ideological ground. He was the oldest living member of the CPI (M).
Com. Samar Mukherjee, throughout his life, fought for toiling masses and emancipation of the working class. While being a Member of Parliament, Com Samar Mukherjee had taken up various issues of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the floor of the Parliament and with the authorities in the Govt. of India. With the formation of the CPI (M) in these islands in 1983, Com Samar Mukherjee was a frequent visitor to the islands, having visited a number of outer islands on different occasions and heard the grievances of the people in general and workers and employees in particular.
