Sri Vijaya Puram, October 18: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, issued a notification dated October 16, 2026, notifying Sri Vijaya Puram as an infected area (epicentre) of African Swine Fever (ASF) in pigs. In view of this, the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) has constituted a Special Task Force with immediate effect. The Task Force will work in close coordination with the AH&VS Department, the A&N Administration and the A&N Police to prevent and contain the spread of the disease within the municipal limits.
African Swine Fever does not infect humans and poses no direct risk to human health. It is, however, a highly contagious viral disease of pigs that causes high mortality. There is no vaccine or specific treatment, so strict preventive measures are essential to stop its spread.
The Special Task Force will regularly inspect areas where pigs are kept, reared, transported or found roaming. It will identify and maintain records of pig owners, pig-rearing locations, stray pigs and suspected affected areas. Sick or dead pigs will be reported immediately to the veterinary authorities for testing and further action. The Task Force will also enforce movement restrictions, isolation and other containment measures as directed by the veterinary authorities. In addition, it will ensure the safe handling and deep burial of carcasses as per prescribed norms, and manage stray pigs in consultation with veterinary officials. Affected locations, equipment and vehicles will be cleaned and disinfected. Pig owners, residents and vendors will be informed about the preventive measures and restrictions in force.
SVPMC appeals to all residents, pig owners, vendors and traders to cooperate fully in controlling the disease. Pig owners are requested to keep their pigs confined, not allow them to roam freely, and keep sick pigs separate from healthy ones. Any sick or dead pig should be reported immediately to SVPMC or the nearest Veterinary Officer. While the restrictions are in force, the public is requested not to buy, sell, transport or bring in live pigs, pork or pork products. Pig carcasses or waste should not be dumped in drains, open spaces, creeks or the sea, and pig sheds and their surroundings should be kept clean and disinfected. Citizens are also requested to extend full cooperation to the Task Force teams during inspections and field operations.
