
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 06: The State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW), Directorate of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Directorate of Agriculture, organized a one-day training program on “Heliconia Bouquet Making and Tropical Flower Arrangement” on 5 October 2026 at the Agriculture Training Hall, Goalghar.
The program commenced with an address by the Director of Agriculture, who highlighted the favourable Agro-climatic conditions of the Islands and the promising potential of Heliconia as a commercially viable ornamental crop, particularly for local markets, tourism, floral decoration and value-added enterprises.
In the technical session Dr. Nitu Sindhu (State Mission Coordinator, SHEW), delivered a presentation on “Opportunities in Heliconia Cultivation and Value Addition”, covering cultivation potential, post-harvest handling, value addition, market opportunities and avenues for entrepreneurship.
A live demonstration on flower arrangement and bouquet making was conducted by Mrs. Bhanumati (Farmer and Florist), showcasing techniques of flower selection, color coordination and bouquet preparation. This was followed by a hands-on practical session, wherein all participants prepared their own small bouquets using Heliconia and tropical foliage.
An interaction and feedback session was facilitated by Mrs. Apurva Singh & Mrs. B. Bharti providing participants an opportunity to share their experiences and explore the potential of floral value addition as a livelihood activity.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Mohit Mishra, Director, Social Welfare, with a focus on promoting women’s skills, entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance. The training concluded with an emphasis on floriculture and value addition as promising avenues for sustainable livelihoods and women’s economic empowerment in the Islands.
