Port Blair, Jun 3: Andaman and Nicobar police bomb squad investigated a suspicious-looking brown box lying next to the stairs in the Bengali Club building today.
According to the sources the call was made by one of the shop owner of the premises. The bomb news spread this morning when one of the frequent visitor of the building called up a shop owner and informed him about the suspicious brown box lying in the building premises, the shop owner in turn informed the Police control room and the authorities rushed to the site and cleared the area.
It was around 0930 hrs and the traffic on the subsequent road was on peak, commuters on witnessing high security in the area got off their wheels for a stroll which filled the place with hundreds of people waiting to capture the bomb diffusion in their cameras.
Police authorities restricted the use of cameras and mobile in the area and requested people to empty out the site after which the bomb squad arrived with their sophisticated modern bomb detection devices which created more curiosity in public and a crowd gathered there to witness the bomb detection episode.
Police authorities had a tough time controlling the crowd, but soon the place emptied out when the bomb was called hoax by the bomb squad after checking the box thoroughly for about half an hour.
Later when the suspicious brown box was opened the authorities found some old clothes in it. The hoax bomb became the center of attraction for everyone out here in town because the security agencies are on high alert on a possible costal intrusion by one of the well known terrorist organizations which has undertaken several bomb blasts globally.
The call for the suspicious looking box was most probably made as a result of the awareness created by the authorities through the local media.
