Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 18: In a recently concluded campaign under the National Oral Health Programme (NOHP), NHM, Directorate of Health Services has undertaken School-Level Dental Screening activities in coordination with the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) teams across the Islands.
As part of the School-Level Oral Health Programme, during the period from June 2026 to August 2026, a total of 47 schools across the Islands were covered, benefiting 5,821 school-going children through dental screening. A total of 804 children were referred to the nearest health facility having a Dental Unit for further evaluation and treatment.
During the screening, various Oral Health conditions, including Dental Caries, Gingival problems (Gingivitis), Malocclusion and Retained deciduous (milk) teeth, were identified. Among the conditions detected, dental caries was found to be the most commonly observed oral health problem.
The students were also sensitized on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, including brushing teeth twice daily using proper brushing techniques, replacing toothbrushes every three months, rinsing the mouth after meals, maintaining healthy dietary practices and visiting a Dental Surgeon for regular dental check-ups, preferably every six months.
