Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 18: A delegation of CPI (M) Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee led by its Secretary D. Ayyappan met the newly sworn-in Lt Governor, A & N Islands on 17th September, 2026. The party elaborately discussed various burning issues of the islanders and submitted a memorandum. CPI (M) demanded for the establishment of a Legislative Assembly on the Puducherry model for Andaman & Nicobar Islands and requested the Lt Governor to take up the matter with the Govt. of India.
CPI (M) brought to the notice of the Lt Governor the problems faced by the patients and students of ANIIMS due to the shortage of faculty, equipment, medicine, staff, etc. CPI (M) demanded the Lt Governor to take necessary steps to run the ANIIMS as a permanent establishment for which 650 posts are required to be sanctioned. CPI(M) further requested the Lt Governor to allot sufficient funds for the ANIIMS to procure medicine, equipment and machineries as a special case.
CPI (M) expressed grave concern over the lack of doctors and medicine in the Administration’s hospitals (PHCs, CHCs, District Hospitals, etc) and demanded to take appropriate steps to post sufficient number of Specialist Doctors either through Central Health Service Cadre or through direct recruitment for the Andaman & Nicobar cadre of specialist doctors.
Referring to the frequent power cuts in the islands, CPI (M) demanded that Power Houses of the Electricity Department may be modernized by installing more and more diesel generating sets to tide over the present power crisis at Port Blair and rural South Andaman areas.
CPI (M) delegation brought to the notice of the Lt Governor the acute water scarcity felt in the Port Blair and rural South Andaman areas and the failure of the government to implement any new drinking water projects during the last several years except the Rutland project and urged him to ensure a permanent solution to the drinking water crisis in the islands. The party also suggested exploring the possibility of desalination of sea water to drinking water.
CPI (M) conveyed its grave concern over the slow progress of renovation work of NH4 even after 10 years of handing over the work to NHIDCL. Lt Governor patiently heard the issues presented before him by the CPI leaders and assured of appropriate action.
