Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 15: In a significant initiative aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and improving awareness about oral cancer, the Inner Wheel Club of Port Blair (District No. 329) organized an Oral Cancer Detection and Awareness Camp for the workers of Chatham Saw Mill on Saturday at the mill premises.
The camp was organized as part of the club’s ongoing commitment to community welfare, with a special focus on providing accessible healthcare services to industrial workers and encouraging the early detection of oral health problems.
More than 100 workers participated in the camp and availed themselves of free oral health screenings and expert medical advice. The initiative sought to create awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, recognizing early warning signs of oral cancer, and adopting healthy lifestyle practices to reduce the risk of oral diseases.
With a focus on Early Detection and Prevention, the camp educated workers about the symptoms that should not be ignored, including persistent mouth ulcers, unusual patches in the mouth, unexplained bleeding, swelling, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, and other changes in oral health. Oral cancer is a serious public health concern, and early identification of suspicious lesions and other abnormalities can play a crucial role in ensuring timely medical intervention.
Special emphasis was placed on the harmful effects of tobacco consumption, including smoking and smokeless tobacco products, which are major risk factors associated with oral cancer. The workers were also encouraged to maintain proper oral hygiene, undergo regular dental check-ups, and seek medical attention promptly whenever they noticed any unusual changes in their oral cavity.
The medical screenings were conducted by Dr. Vishal, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon from Arora Dental Clinic. During the camp, Dr. Vishal carried out comprehensive oral examinations and assessed the oral health of the participating workers. He provided individual guidance on preventive healthcare, oral hygiene practices, and the importance of regular medical consultations. Workers who were found to have suspicious lesions, potential risk factors, or other conditions requiring further evaluation were advised to seek specialized medical consultation and appropriate follow-up care.
Speaking on the occasion, the President of the Inner Wheel Club of Port Blair highlighted the importance of extending preventive healthcare services directly to communities and workplaces, ensuring that individuals have access to timely health screenings and professional medical guidance.
