Rangat, June 30: A State Transport Service (STS) bus carrying around 50 passengers met with an accident near Sabari Junction, close to St. Mary’s School on National Highway-4 in Middle Andaman today after reportedly losing control and plunging into a roadside ditch.
According to preliminary information, all passengers, nearly 50, sustained injuries, ranging from minor to major, in the mishap. All the injured were initially rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Rangat, where they received emergency medical treatment.
Of the injured, nine passengers, including the bus driver, were referred to GB Pant Hospital, Sri Vijaya Puram, for advanced treatment. Among them, four to five passengers are reported to have sustained serious injuries. The driver, also suffered severe chest injuries and a few fractures. He was also shifted to the hospital.
Soon after the accident, teams from the Police Department, Fire and Emergency Services, Health Department, and the local administration rushed to the spot and carried out a coordinated rescue operation. Assistant Commissioner, Rangat and other officials supervised the rescue efforts and later visited CHC Rangat to review the treatment being provided to the injured.
The referred patients were transported by boat to Sri Vijaya Puram under medical supervision. A team of healthcare personnel accompanied the patients to ensure continuous medical care during the journey.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been established. Despite the severity of the accident, no fatalities have been reported, till now.
