Port Blair, June 18: The Deputy Commissioner Office Campus of South Andaman region is one of the busiest places of Port Blair city as the campus houses several important offices like DC Office, Tehsilder Office, SP Office, Disaster Control Room, SDM office and Immigration unit of A & N Police.
One working days, the area remains jam packed with four wheelers, making movement of two wheelers and also public, impossible. Cars and official vehicles of different officers are parked anywhere and everywhere, which leaves many four wheelers trapped for hours and hours inside the campus. The lone traffic constable posted there also remain helpless as he can’t play superman and lift cars to make way for other vehicles.
Just 50 mtrs away from DC office the Administration has built a beautiful parking area, close to ASI building, which remain largely vacant even during rush hours. There is a need to prohibit entry of all four wheelers, including government vehicles, inside the DC office campus as four wheeler owners can easily park their cars in the parking area (near ASI building) and take a walk upto DC office.
“The problem is not with private four wheelers. The problem is largely because of government vehicles as officers go inside buildings and drivers sit with their four wheelers inside the DC office complex for hours and hours, causing jam. Cars, which are driven by driver should be asked to parking in ASI parking area as after completion of work the concerned officer can easily call the driver by phone and go out. This will provide enough parking space for self driven cars and the problem of congestion will be solved,” said a staff working in the area, on the condition of anonymity.
“How can you ask some vehicles to park at ASI parking and allow others. There has to be uniform rules for all,” said a senior police officer who does not want his name to be quoted when asked about prohibiting entry of four wheelers inside the campus.
Whatever may be the views but the problem is during rush hour movement of general public becomes impossible in the office campus due to excess number of cars, which are haphazardly parked everywhere. The Traffic Department must bring out some solution to this.
