Sri Vijaya Puram, June 29: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, successfully organised a Veterinary Health Camp cum Awareness Training Programme on Pig Farming at Harminder Bay, Little Andaman on 29th June 2026.
The one-day programme witnessed active participation from local tribal farmers and livestock owners. During the Veterinary Health Camp, a total of 516 animals were treated and examined by the veterinary team. The species-wise breakup of cases handled is as follows: Goats – 51, Pigs – 177, Poultry – 266, and Dogs – 22. The camp provided on-the-spot treatment, deworming, vaccination, and necessary medicines to the animals brought by the farmers.
Simultaneously, a special Awareness Training Programme on Scientific Pig Farming was conducted, in which 20 tribal participants actively took part. The training session covered important topics such as modern pig rearing practices, balanced nutrition, disease management, proper housing, biosecurity measures, and profitable backyard pig farming techniques suitable for the island conditions.
The programme was aimed at improving overall animal health, enhancing productivity, and providing sustainable livelihood opportunities to tribal farmers in the remote areas of Little Andaman. Such outreach camps play a vital role in reaching out to farmers in far-flung areas and delivering quality veterinary services at their doorstep.
The Department of AH&VS remains committed to organising regular veterinary health camps and awareness programmes in remote and tribal areas to strengthen livestock healthcare services and support rural livelihoods through scientific animal husbandry practices across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands
