Sri Vijaya Puram, June 23: In a major breakthrough in the sensational theft of 18 iPhones worth over Rs.18 lakh from a mobile store opposite School Ground, Bathu Basti, police arrested one of the three accused within 24 hours of the incident, while the remaining two are absconding. Police teams are conducting raids, and the duo is expected to be arrested soon.
According to sources, all three accused had been released on bail just a day before the theft after being lodged in jail in connection with an earlier theft case. Soon after coming out of jail, they allegedly joined hands again and committed the burglary.
The arrested accused is a resident of is reportedly from Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu).The second accused is from Prem Nagar, while the third is from Round Basti.
In an attempt to evade arrest, the CCTV-captured accused reportedly shaved his head and changed his appearance. However, the police successfully tracked and arrested him within 24 hours through swift investigation and technical surveillance.
Police have so far recovered two to three of the stolen iPhones, while efforts are underway to recover the remaining devices and apprehend the two absconding accused.
The theft took place around 12:30 am on the intervening night of 22 June and 23 June when the accused allegedly broke open the shutter of the Digital Zone electronics shop using a vehicle spanner, damaged CCTV cameras, and stole 18 iPhones and some other stuffs.
