Sri Vijaya Puram, June 9: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration, has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the coming days, while advising fishermen not to venture into the sea until June 13 due to rough weather conditions.
According to information received from the State Control Room based on forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from June 9 onwards.
The advisory also highlights adverse sea conditions along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coast. Squally weather with strong surface winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, is expected to prevail over the region. Sea conditions are forecast to remain rough during this period.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea from June 9 to June 13, 2026, or until further notice. Authorities have urged members of the fishing community to strictly follow the advisory and avoid undertaking fishing operations in the open sea during the warning period.
The weather bulletin has further indicated the possibility of swell wave activity along the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Swell waves with a period ranging between 14.0 and 19.0 seconds and wave heights between 0.9 and 2.0 metres are forecast along parts of the coastline. Such conditions may lead to surging waves and increased risk for small boats and marine activities.
The administration has advised owners and operators of small fishing vessels, country boats and other marine craft to exercise utmost caution. People engaged in coastal and recreational activities have also been urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary exposure to rough sea conditions.
A separate advisory issued for farmers indicates that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely to occur at isolated places over the islands during the next several days. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard crops, agricultural equipment and livestock from possible damage caused by strong winds and adverse weather.
Officials stated that all concerned departments and emergency response agencies have been informed about the weather forecast. The administration has urged residents, fishermen and farmers to remain updated through official advisories and follow instructions issued by authorities in the interest of safety.
The State Control Room continues to monitor the situation and has advised the public to remain cautious until weather conditions improve.
