
Sri Vijaya Puram, June 05: The Biological Park, Chidiyatapu celebrates World Environment Day 2026 with ceremonial planting by Padma Mr. Awardee (2024), Mrs. Kamachi Chellammal, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Her participation underscored the importance of individual and collective efforts towards environmental protection and ecological restoration.
A series of environmental awareness and plantation activities aimed at promoting conservation and sustainable living was carried out in collaboration with the Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram.
As part of the celebrations, 36 students, along with officials and staff of the Science Centre, PRI members, park staff, and workers, participated in a plantation drive within the Biological Park premises. Environmental awareness videos on biodiversity conservation, climate change, waste management, and sustainable practices were screened to sensitize participants to contemporary environmental challenges.
An educational tour of the park was organized for students and PRI members, providing insights into wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and the role of zoological parks in environmental education. A nature-based competition titled “Smell the Nature” was also conducted, enabling students to identify native flora of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and appreciate the region’s rich botanical diversity.
Addressing the participants, the Deputy Director, Biological Park, underscored the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding natural resources and biodiversity for future generations. An Environment Protection Pledge was administered to all participants, reaffirming their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment towards conservation and the adoption of environmentally responsible lifestyles. The Biological Park, Chidiyatapu continues to promote environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation through education, outreach, and sustainable management initiatives.
