Sri Vijaya Puram, May 15: Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, had taken up the matter on 03.04.2026 with the Minister of Communications, Government of India, seeking laying of direct Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) connectivity to Shaheed Dweep to ensure reliable network coverage, accessible digital services for residents and tourists, and improved telecom connectivity for other remote islands of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Responding to the request of the MP, the Minister of Communications, through a D.O. letter dated 11th May 2026, informed that BSNL has recently commissioned a new high-capacity connectivity link from North Bay, Sri Vijaya Puram to Shaheed Dweep, which has significantly improved network stability and enhanced overall bandwidth availability for the island.
The Minister further informed that a High-Level Committee has been constituted to examine submarine cable connectivity to the remaining islands of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands with the objective of strengthening and expanding digital and telecom connectivity across the Union Territory.
Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, MP, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Minister of Communications for taking proactive initiatives to address the long-pending connectivity issues faced by the people residing in remote and backward islands of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
