Sri Vijaya Puram, May 3: In a remarkable incident of survival and courage, a man from Haryana, working as a receptionist at a private resort in Shaheed Dweep, was rescued after floating in the open sea for nearly five hours on Sunday morning.
According to sources, Mr. Vinod Ghelot had boarded MV Strait Island vessel from Shaheed Dweep at around 8:30 AM and was on his way to Sri Vijaya Puram. He was scheduled to travel to the mainland the following morning. During the journey, he reportedly started feeling unwell due to sea sickness and went towards the rear side of the ferry to vomit.
It is reported that while vomiting, he lost his balance and accidentally fell into the sea. The incident was not witnessed by anyone on board. Despite the dangerous situation, Mr. Ghelot managed to stay afloat in the water for several hours, displaying remarkable presence of mind and courage.
During this period, he reportedly saw several vessels, including two catamarans, passing through the area. However, none of them noticed him in the water. Understanding the risk of drifting unnoticed, he continued floating at the same area and kept looking for an opportunity to draw attention.
After nearly five hours in the sea, his efforts paid off when a passing pontoon heading towards Shaheed Dweep noticed him after he shouted for help. The crew immediately responded and successfully rescued him.
Meanwhile, back in Shaheed Dweep, his manager became concerned when Mr. Ghelot did not reach Sri Vijaya Puram, even though his luggage was found inside the ferry. The matter was promptly reported to Police Station Shaheed Dweep. The Station House Officer informed PS Aberdeen and the Marine Police, initiating a search response.
By the time coordination was underway, the pontoon had already reached Shaheed Dweep with the rescued man. He was found to be severely dehydrated and sunburnt due to prolonged exposure to the sun and seawater. He was immediately taken to the Shaheed Dweep hospital, where he received first aid and medical attention. Sources confirmed that he is now stable well and was released after medical attention.
The incident is being described as nothing short of a miracle, highlighting the man’s determination and calmness in a life-threatening situation. The timely action of the pontoon crew has also been widely appreciated for saving his life.
