Middle Andaman, April 20: Residents of Uttara Gram Panchayat have renewed their demand for the revival of the old RCC fish market building at Uttara Bazar, highlighting the difficulties faced by local fishermen and farmers in the absence of a proper marketplace. With the onset of the rainy season, vendors are reportedly struggling to sell fish and vegetables in open spaces, leading to losses and inconvenience.
Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Uttara, Mr. Prakash Mandal, while talking to Andaman Sheekha today, said that the Panchayat is keen to ensure that the unused market infrastructure is put to productive use for the benefit of the local community. He emphasized that the renovation and reopening of the fish market building would provide much-needed relief to fishermen and agricultural producers, enabling them to conduct their trade in a protected and organized environment.
Local sources stated that the demand has been pending for a long time, with repeated appeals made to the concerned authorities. The proposed revival of the market is expected to not only improve livelihood opportunities but also streamline the sale of fresh produce in the region.
According to sources a formal request has been submitted to the Director of Fisheries, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Port Blair, seeking the handover of the old RCC fish market building along with its office space to the Panchayat. The letter highlights the urgent need for renovation and restarting of the fish and vegetable market to address the challenges faced by local vendors, especially during adverse weather conditions.
