Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 17: As part of the observance of Fire Service Week from 14th to 20th April 2026, under the theme “Safe School, Safe Hospital & Fire Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention,” the Fire Service Department of Car Nicobar conducted a fire safety awareness and demonstration programme—for the first time—at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), STC, Car Nicobar.
The Fire Service team, under the supervision of Mr. K. Rajesh (Inspector, Fire Service, Nicobar District), along with Mr. Bimal Roy (ASI), Station In-Charge, Fire Station Car Nicobar, Mr. Ashish Peter (Head Constable (SG) – 2536), and Mr. Cavin (HGV/723), visited the centre and conducted practical demonstrations on fire prevention and safety measures.
A total of 54 trainees (31 girls and 23 boys), along with 3 coaches and 2 staff members, actively participated in the programme. The trainees also actively participated in the practical demonstration session, gaining hands-on experience in handling fire safety equipment and emergency response techniques.
During the session, Mr. Bimal Roy (ASI) highlighted that fire accidents at home are a serious concern, particularly in places like Car Nicobar, where many incidents occur due to electrical short circuits. He explained that climatic conditions such as humidity and salt-laden air contribute to the deterioration of wiring systems, increasing the risk of electrical fires, especially in kitchens. He emphasized that prevention is the most effective approach, including regular inspection of wiring, avoiding overloading of sockets, using quality appliances, and ensuring timely repair of damaged wires by qualified electricians.
He also explained the classification of fire, which includes:
• Class A: Fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, and cloth
• Class B: Fires involving flammable liquids like petrol, diesel, and oil
• Class C: Fires involving electrical equipment
• Class D: Fires involving combustible metals
• Class K (or F): Fires involving cooking oils and fats
He further advised keeping flammable materials away from electrical points and cooking areas, and installing safety devices such as circuit breakers, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers.
The session aimed to educate trainees on emergency response, fire prevention techniques, and safety preparedness.
At the end of the programme on behalf of SAI STC Car Nicobar, the Centre In-Charge expressed sincere gratitude to the Fire Service Department for their valuable efforts in promoting fire safety awareness and strengthening protective measures among the trainees.
