Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 17: Mr. Avinash Sarder, a 23-year-old youth from Dasarathpur village, Rangat, Middle Andaman, has emerged as an inspiring example of self-employment through scientific poultry farming. Son of Mr. Dhruba Sarder, Avinash started his journey with a small number of desi birds and broilers driven by his keen interest in poultry. With a clear vision to enhance his income, he expanded his operations by constructing improved sheds and availed timely financial assistance under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme with active guidance from the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS).
Under this initiative, Avinash procured “500 broiler quail chicks” from the Central Hatchery, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Sri Vijaya Puram. Broiler quails are known for their fast growth rate, early maturity, and minimal space requirement, making them highly suitable for young entrepreneurs. He expressed great satisfaction over the rapid development of the birds, noting that they started laying eggs within just six weeks, ensuring early and regular returns.
At present, Avinash is earning a steady income through dual sources — by selling male quails for meat and collecting approximately ”150 eggs daily” from the female quails. This integrated approach has significantly improved his financial stability and livelihood.
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services has been actively promoting broiler quail farming across the islands, particularly encouraging rural youth to adopt it as a viable self-employment option. The Department provides technical guidance, quality chicks, and financial linkage support to ensure sustainable income generation.
The success story of Mr. Avinash Sarder stands as a powerful inspiration for other unemployed youth in the islands to take up scientific poultry farming, especially broiler quail rearing, which requires less space, offers faster returns, and ensures regular income.
