Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 09: Scientists from the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram, successfully conducted a talk on Leptospirosis, Sickle Cell disease and some of the most common diseases found during the rainy seasons in parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The interactive session took place in the conference hall of the college and attended by a large number of students and faculty members apart from the gracious presence of Principal Dr. RVR Murthy and three scientists from MRCSVP namely, Dr. Aparup Das, Scientist G & Director ICMR-RMRCSVP, Dr. M.G. Madanan, Scientist F, ICMR-RMRCSVP and Dr. K.S. Mohammed Sameer Ali, Scientist B (Medical), ICMR- RMRCSVP.
The session was initiated by Principal, Dr. RVR Murthy with his in depth knowledge about the surrounding areas in North & Middle Andaman and an introduction to Leptospirosis and other water born diseases. Dr. Aparup Das in his talk elaborated upon the causes, prevention and treatment of Leptospirosis in general. He also talked in detail about the genetic illness known as the Sickle Cell disease. It was followed by Dr. Sameer Ali’s detailed talk about the symptoms of Leptospirosis and their all-possible prevention. Dr. M.G. Madanan talked in detail about the presence of Leptospirosis bacteria in the fields and contaminated waters and the way it spreads to the human body. He particularly emphasized on the fact that Leptospirosis bacterial infection is completely preventable if right precautions are taken.
The talk was concluded with an engaging discussion participated by the present faculty members and students. The members of the ICMR-RMRCSVP have also distributed copies of the newsletter “Anvesan” to the faculty members and students. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Azhar Uddin Sahaji, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
