Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr. 5: In a commendable initiative highlighting community participation in fisheries welfare, the Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration, facilitated a unique support program at the Fish Landing Center in Guptapara, where 80 students from Gear International Innovative School, Bengaluru contributed to the restoration of traditional fishing vessels as part of community engagement.
The program, organised in collaboration with Discover Andaman Holidays Pvt. Ltd., focused on strengthening the livelihood assets of economically vulnerable fishermen. Three non-motorised dinghies, identified by the Department as belonging to needy fishers, were handed over to the students for restoration work.
Under the supervision of fisheries officials, including Assistant Fisheries Guard, Shri Nadeem, the students undertook cleaning, minor repairs, maintenance, and repainting of the boats using marine-grade coatings. Officials also sensitised participants on the importance of proper vessel upkeep and colour coding, which plays a crucial role in identification, safety, and regulatory compliance in the fisheries sector.
The initiative not only improved the operational condition of the boats but also directly contributed to enhancing the earning capacity of the beneficiary fishermen. Local fishers actively engaged with the students during the process, sharing insights into traditional fishing practices and challenges faced in sustaining their livelihoods.
The program commenced with encouragement from Guptapara Pradhan, Shri Durlabh Das, who appreciated the Department’s efforts in bridging the gap between communities and young learners while addressing grassroots needs in the fisheries sector.
Fishermen expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the restored boats would immediately support their daily fishing activities. Fisheries officials emphasised that such collaborative efforts are vital in promoting sustainable fisheries development, community resilience, and awareness among youth about the sector’s socio-economic significance.
The initiative stands as an example of how educational outreach, when aligned with fisheries development goals, can create tangible benefits for coastal communities while fostering responsibility and awareness among future generations.
